So, what are your thoughts on the Sport of Bowls?
Well, whatever you may have read, or whatever you have heard about, and whatever your age, this really is one truely fantastic Sport.
Our youngest member is just 7 years old. Our oldest members are in their late eighties. We've had members at the club that have been here for over 35 years and they are still going strong. Please forget those mis-conceptions you may have heard about our great Sport. Bowls is for everyone - and Bowls could be the right sport for you.
And you know what - the Social side of the game at Buntingford Bowls Club is second to none......
Now let's have a talk about how much it's going to cost you to join Buntingford Bowls Club. Here is everything you need to know:
Under 18's - You are FREE, yes it is completely FREE for you to join.
- It won't cost you a single penny to join our club. Even the equipment you need is provided FREE of charge.
Now I don't know of any other Sport in Buntingford that could offer you a Club where you can play every night of the Summer, and every weekend of the Summer completely FREE of charge. Now that's an offer you surely can't refuse?
- I'm too young to play Bowls, I hear you say?
Of course you're not is our reply. And here's why:
Some of our Junior members in the past have gone on to win District and Hertfordshire County Competitions. Some have reached the England National Championship Finals. Some have even played against World Champions and some have gone on to win England International Caps - and you know what, the next person to do that might just be you?
How about someone looking to join Buntingford Bowls Club?
For New Members looking to Join - Yep, you guessed it. It is completely FREE for you aswell. The equipment you need to use is FREE, The Coaching Lessons are FREE, and you can visit the Club and it won't cost you a penny either. It's not like other clubs where you have to pay to become a member first to see if you like it, so here at Buntingford it's a bit like 'try before you buy'.
How about our Senior Citizens?
So, let's have a think about this. We'll call this our 'Concession Rate' and you know what - we'll give you a discount from the full Membership price. How about that? A deal you can't resist......
For our Full Members?
Our Annual Membership fee is one of the cheapest around. We've seen only one price rise in the last 10 years. Now that's not too bad is it?
Average the Annual Fee over the year and you'll find it will cost you less than the price of a Cup of Tea every single week. Now that's a great deal.
What about those Partners that don't want to play Bowls but their other halves do?
Well, we'll give you a special deal just for you. You'll be called 'Associate Members' and we'll only ask for a small gesture from you so that you can use the Club all year round. Can't say fairer than that, can we?
So here's the full list of our Annual Subscriptions:
Junior Member - FREE
New Members - FREE
Concessions - £75
Full Membership - £90
Associate Member - £20
Want to know some of the rules of Bowls?
You'll see that it's not that difficult to play, and it's not that difficult to get to grips with the rules.
You play on a rink and bowl towards a 'Jack' - That's the small white ball.
Once everyone has played their Bowls, the one that is closest to the 'Jack' scores a point - or a 'Shot' as we call it. If you have two bowls closer than everyone else, then you'll score 2 'shots'. It's the same for 3, and 4 etc.
Once you've decided how many 'shots' are awarded, we call that an 'End'. Collect all the Bowls up and then play another 'End'.
And that's about it really. See - it's not that difficult to understand is it?
Now let's look at the format of the game?
- If you want to play on your own - then there are Singles matches to play.
- Want to play with a friend? - Well, you can play in Pairs.
- What if there are three of us? - then you can play in Triples.
- But there's four of us? Well, you can play in Fours too.
- I want to play Bowls with my Husband I hear you say?
- I want to play Bowls with my Wife you ask? - Well you can do both of them in Mixed Pairs, or even play as Mixed Fours.
What about the scoring system?
So some games are played to '21 Shots', and some are played to '18 Ends' or '21 Ends'. But there's no need to get into the detail of that right now as you'll soon pick it up once you get into the swing of it and start playing.
What level do I want to play at?
We have so many levels of Bowls that will suit everyone. Our values at Buntingford Bowls Club are 'A Club for all Ages, Abilities and Aspirations'.
So here are your options:
- You just want to play Bowls and not be involved in all that 'competitive stuff'?
We can accomodate that. We have a very friendly side to the game that we'll encourage you to become involved in. If you just want to play with your friends, you can do that. If you want to play against other clubs that are interested in the 'Friendly' side of the game, then you can do that aswell. Those are the games where the scores aren't really that important. It's more about enjoying the summer weather, socialising and having a bit of fun.
- But I'm competitive and want to play in Competitions. Can I do that?
Of course you can. There are even different levels of competiton Bowls you can play at, and we'll make sure we'll find a level that will suit you.
Did you know that there isn't a single sport that will see an oridnary member like you and me play against a County Player, or play against a National Champion, or even play against a top World Ranked player on a regular basis. Bowls really does give you the opportunity to play against the best of the best.
So, are you hooked yet?
Now you'll see lots of advertising. There'll be information on Social Media and leaflet drops during the first few months of the year promoting Buntingford Bowls Club and how you can become involved in the Sport of Bowls.
Buntingford Bowls Club will hold 'Open Days' during the month of April so you can visit the club and get a feel for the place. You'll get to meet some of the members and get to see what's in store for you.
During the month of May, FREE lessons will be provided by qualified coaches and they'll help you on the green and give you all the encouragement you'll need. Did I mention all of this is FREE? I think maybe I did once or twice.........
In the Winter there is always someone down the club on a Wednesday morning. Feel free to pop in and have a chat and have a cup of tea - or if the bar is open then how about something a little stronger?
